I have said this phrase countless times at work... more so whenever a colleague comes to me looking frustrated and stressed. Preparing for a complex surgery that staff feels under-trained, has proven to cause workplace anxiety.
I love art and architecture. I have long imagined the architecture of a workspace and platform that will lessen or eliminate the repetitive surgical preparation challenges, frustrations, and anxieties. A space and tool that has a resolute foundation of accessibility, transparency and communication. I envisioned it to follow Le Corbusier design of functionalism and expressionism. Its function is as simple as providing a sanctuary of references, innovative ideas, and two-way communication. Its aim is to gain emotions of calm, delight, and encouragement.
The Workspace. I first redesigned the layout of the instrumentation workspace to allow for a navigational intuitiveness and efficiency with an injection of subtle art. I used colors, font design, and functional art pieces, that will catch attention and direct efficiency. I envision and am still engaged in ultimately achieving a workplace that transcends into a dynamic system that invokes bliss.
The value of having fun. I noticed that people tend to achieve great productivity when they’re having fun. I believe that adding these elements to our work system will make work, seem less like work.
The Tool. I have always wanted to create a website that will provide a comprehensive source of information and details... with geographical accessibility. A surgical team scheduled to assist a procedure can prepare minutes, hours, or days before, and benefit from lowered anxiety purely from an accessible resource tool. As I talked about it years ago (ha!), and finally decided to test it out this year, I saw how it positively affected the productivity and emotions of the surgical staff and surgeons. The once 'I wish we have' tool named Atlas was therefore created.
Atlas is slowly becoming the pièce de résistance with the contributions of all the forward-thinkers I work with. I am grateful and humbled by their willingness and graciousness.
